Sharjah

The UAE’s cultural capital — museums, calligraphy, and no pretence.

✈️ 7h from London🏨 Hotels from £45/night🗓 Best: November to March — daytime 22-27°C, cool evenings

Sharjah is the emirate that kept the culture. UNESCO named it Arab Capital of Culture for good reason — 23 museums, the Heart of Sharjah restoration project, and a calligraphy museum that beats anything in Dubai. It’s also the cheapest way to visit the UAE.

Why UK travellers go

Fly into Dubai (30 minutes away) or direct from London Gatwick on Air Arabia — the cheapest UAE fare on the market. Hotels are roughly half Dubai prices and licensed venues are rare (dry emirate), so your mornings are productive.

Sharjah travel FAQ

Do I need a visa for Sharjah from the UK?+

No. UK passport holders get the same free 30-day UAE visit visa on arrival that applies to Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Is alcohol available in Sharjah?+

Sharjah is a dry emirate — no licensed bars or hotel minibars. You can drink legally at private residences and in neighbouring Dubai / Ajman. Many visitors base themselves in Dubai and day-trip to Sharjah.

Is Sharjah worth visiting separately from Dubai?+

For cultural depth, yes. The museums, Heart of Sharjah and the Souk Al Arsah are genuinely unique and refreshingly uncommercial. Budget half a day minimum.
