“Overrated Hotel in Overrated Destination”
The hotel is relatively convenient; it is about three unpaved blocks from the main street; at the mouth of that street are the visitor center and two “transfer” operators (to hiking destinations) and the (awful) shuttle bus to Tbilisi. Breakfast was ok. The room was clean, the bed comfortable, and the view ok.
1) The nice people who work the front desk don’t speak English; they have to phone someone to translate. 2) When you communicate via booking.com, the response usually takes a couple of hours. 3) water spills all over the bathroom floor from the shower stall. 4) I had the impression that the room was higher, and that another building would not be so close to my window; don’t get me wrong: the view was generally good, but there was no privacy with the curtains open. 5) I texted the proprietors about the shuttle bus to Tbilisi; they told me to simply show up. What they didn’t do but could have done was reserve a place for me. I was very early—third to fifth on line. As I struggled to get my suitcase wedged into the small space on the shuttle, a whole bunch of Georgians snuck on the shuttle, taking up every seat, claiming they “reserved” their seat in advance. There was no f-ing way I would have allowed that travesty to stand, but it all could have been avoided if the hotel had extended themselves just a little. [I wish I could have returned with the tour van that dropped me off because the shuttle was a death-trap that pumped poisonous exhaust into the passenger compartment.] 6) Kazbegy has roaming stray dogs: they occasionally bite people (check the medical center reviews) that’s sometimes an issue as you walk to and from the hotel. Beyond that, I loved the food, and the people were nice. However, the destination was overrated. The places I went hiking (the reason why people come here) were dangerous: Juta’s road is life-threatening; there are signs to that effect. Truso’s road also seemed to be crumbling, and the Truso Valley is a giant bog, alternately muddy and dusty, again with too many stray unpredictable dogs, that smells like a sewer because of the sulphur.
Pleasant staff, a comfortable bed, well located, clean and adequate in all regards.
