“I would not choose to stay here again.”
The one positive thing I can say is that the staff were polite.
I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott Colombo for 9 nights, and unfortunately, this was one of the most disappointing experiences I have ever had at a five-star hotel. I booked a Superior King Room with City View, but the room I was given was not facing the city as expected. When I raised this at reception, I was told I would need to pay approximately USD 50 extra per day to get a proper city-view room, which I declined, as I had specifically booked a room advertised with a city view. The breakfast was another major disappointment. For a nine-night stay, it became extremely repetitive, with essentially the same selection every day. I expected much more variety from a hotel of this standard. The cleanliness of the room was also below expectations. There were visible stains on the carpet, and by the third day, I had to personally call housekeeping and point out areas where dust had accumulated and needed to be cleaned. This should not be something a guest has to monitor at a five-star property. Unfortunately, the worst part of my stay was becoming seriously ill with what I believe was food poisoning. I became unwell enough that I had to be admitted for medical treatment. During my stay, I had been eating exclusively at the hotel, which is why I strongly suspect the illness was connected to food consumed there. This made an already disappointing experience significantly worse. I also felt that, at times, local guests appeared to receive more attention or preference than foreign guests, which left me feeling uncomfortable and overlooked. I have stayed at many five-star hotels around the world, and this is the first time I have felt compelled to write such a negative review about a five-star property. I actually extended my time in Sri Lanka, but because of the overall experience and becoming ill during my stay, I decided to move to another hotel rather than extend my stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Colombo.
