The Origin Story — a Manchester Spreadsheet That Wouldn't Stop Growing
JetMeAway didn't start as a company. It started as a spreadsheet.
I'm Waqar, and I'm based in Manchester. Before JetMeAway I was doing what a lot of engineers end up doing on the side — building small tools to solve my own annoyances, mostly ignored by everyone except me. The annoyance that turned into JetMeAway was a specific one: booking a family holiday to Turkey in 2023, I priced the same all-inclusive resort on four different sites and got four meaningfully different numbers for the exact same room, on the exact same dates, with the exact same cancellation terms. Not a rounding difference — a genuine £180 spread on a five-night stay.
That sent me down a rabbit hole. I started pulling wholesale hotel rates directly from bed-bank APIs — the same backend suppliers that power a huge share of the travel industry's retail pricing — and comparing them against what the big consumer-facing OTAs were charging for identical rooms. The pattern held far more often than it should have: the wholesale rate, shown honestly with no markup stacked on top, beat the retail price on the household-name sites more often than not. Not always — sometimes an OTA's own negotiated rate genuinely was the best number on the page, and when that happened I wanted the tool to say so, not hide it. But often enough that it became obvious there was a real gap between what travellers were being charged and what the room actually cost to sell.
The spreadsheet became a Python script. The script became a small internal tool I used to book trips for my own family. Then a cousin asked me to check a Dubai hotel for her honeymoon, and the number I found her was materially lower than what she'd been quoted through a well-known agent — enough that she used the difference to upgrade the room category instead of pocketing it. That was the moment it stopped being a personal project. If the gap was real and repeatable, it deserved to be a product other people could use without having to know a bed-bank API existed.
JetMeAway launched properly in 2024 as a flight and hotel comparison engine, and it's grown category by category since — cars, packages, insurance, eSIMs, activities — always following the same rule the spreadsheet started with: pull the most honest price we can find, show it plainly, and never quietly tax the traveller on top of it. We're a small team, based in Manchester, still closer in spirit to that original spreadsheet than to the giants we compare ourselves against. The name itself is a small joke that turned out to carry the whole philosophy: don't just jet away somewhere — JetMeAway to somewhere that actually fits who you are. The Mission — Transparent Comparison, No Markups, No Booking Fees
The mission statement is short on purpose: JetMeAway is a comparison engine, not a middleman. We show live prices across multiple providers for flights, hotels, cars, holiday packages, travel insurance, eSIMs and activities, and we earn through affiliate commissions when a reader books through one of our links — never by adding our own margin on top of the partner's price, and never by charging a separate booking fee.
That sounds like a small distinction until you sit inside the industry and see how much of it runs the other way. A huge share of online travel pricing includes a markup layer that's invisible to the end customer — sometimes a flat percentage, sometimes a dynamic amount tuned by demand and by how price-sensitive the platform thinks you personally are, based on your device, your search history, your location. It's not illegal, and in fairness it's not always dishonest — running a booking platform costs money and someone has to pay for it. But it does mean "cheapest price available" and "cheapest price this specific platform is willing to show you" are two different claims, and most travellers assume they're getting the first when they're often getting the second.
We built JetMeAway around the opposite bet: that a platform which shows the real number, including the times a competitor beats us, earns more trust over a longer time horizon than a platform that always finds a way to look cheapest in the moment. That's a genuine commercial bet, not just a values statement — it means we sometimes send a reader to book through Expedia or Trip.com instead of through our own directly-integrated LiteAPI hotel checkout, because that's honestly where the better number was that day. It costs us a slightly higher-margin booking in the short term. It's the only version of this business we're interested in running.
No markups. The price on a JetMeAway comparison page is the partner's rate. We don't add a percentage on top of a flight, a hotel room, a rental car or a package before showing it to you.
No booking fees. There's no separate service charge, processing fee or "booking protection" upsell bolted onto checkout. If a fee exists, it's the partner's own fee (baggage add-ons, resort fees, local taxes) and it's disclosed at the point it applies — not hidden in a JetMeAway line item.
Comparison, not curation-for-commission. We don't rank a hotel higher because it pays us more. Partners with the deepest wholesale relationships (LiteAPI, RateHawk, Webbeds) do tend to show more competitive rates more often, precisely because those relationships strip out markup layers other channels carry — but the ranking logic is price and fit, not commission size. Compare live hotel prices yourself and you'll see rooms from Expedia, Trip.com, Hotels.com, Agoda, Trivago, RateHawk and Webbeds sitting side by side, sorted honestly.
This is also why you will never see the biggest-name OTAs listed as JetMeAway partners, anywhere on the site or in this post. It isn't an oversight — it's a deliberate exclusion. The biggest OTAs' affiliate commission structures (roughly 3-4%) sit well below what we earn through direct wholesale contracts with LiteAPI, RateHawk and Webbeds (roughly 5-15%), and more importantly for you as a reader, the retail rate a big-name OTA shows often isn't the cheapest number available on that same room once you compare it against a genuine wholesale feed. We'd rather point you at the source that's actually cheapest than the brand that's most recognisable. That's the mission in one sentence: recognisable is not the same as honest, and we've built the whole company around choosing the second one.
The Wholesale-Rate Model — Why LiteAPI, RateHawk and Webbeds Matter
This is the part of the JetMeAway story that's least visible to readers and most important to how the whole site actually works, so it's worth explaining properly rather than waving at it.
Most travel prices you encounter online pass through several layers before they reach you. A hotel sets a rack rate. It sells rooms in bulk, at a discount, to wholesalers and bed banks. Those bed banks distribute that inventory to travel agents, tour operators and online platforms, each of which can add its own margin before the price reaches a search results page. By the time a "deal" reaches your screen, it may have passed through two, three or four margin layers stacked on top of each other — and every layer is invisible to you, because all you see is the final number.
JetMeAway's hotel comparison engine is built to shorten that chain wherever we can. We connect directly to three major bed-bank suppliers:
LiteAPI is a hotel distribution API that aggregates inventory from hundreds of underlying suppliers and offers it at wholesale rates. It isn't a consumer-facing brand you'd recognise — it's infrastructure, the plumbing behind a huge share of the travel industry's pricing. JetMeAway connects to LiteAPI directly, which means the hotel room you see through that feed has one fewer markup layer between the property and you than it would going through a typical retail OTA. LiteAPI is also our primary live-bookable hotel supplier — when you complete a hotel booking directly on JetMeAway rather than clicking through to a partner site, it's LiteAPI's direct payment system handling that transaction, separate entirely from the Stripe rail we use for Duffel flight bookings.
RateHawk is a global B2B hotel booking platform used by travel agents and comparison engines to access wholesale accommodation rates across an unusually wide international inventory — including a lot of independent and boutique properties that never make it onto the biggest consumer OTAs at all. RateHawk earns its keep especially in destinations outside the largest capital cities, where LiteAPI's coverage thins out and a second wholesale source genuinely widens what we can show you.
Webbeds is one of the largest bed banks and travel wholesalers in the world, and it's an active JetMeAway partner contributing to the rates shown in our hotel comparison grid. Worth being precise here: Webbeds is not currently wired into JetMeAway's live payment and booking pipeline — it feeds comparison pricing, while live bookable checkout on JetMeAway runs through LiteAPI's own payment system.
Why does this matter to you as a reader, beyond the mechanics? Because it's the actual, structural reason JetMeAway can show a lower starting price on the same room than a retail-only comparison site — not a marketing claim, a supply-chain fact. When you see a hotel on our hotel comparison page sitting a meaningful amount below the same room on a household-name OTA, the wholesale-rate model is usually why. And when a retail OTA genuinely does beat the wholesale rate that day — it happens, promotions and loyalty pricing occasionally undercut even a direct wholesale feed — our comparison grid shows that too, because the whole point of comparing seven providers side by side (Expedia, Trip.com, Hotels.com, Agoda, Trivago, RateHawk, Webbeds) is to let the actual lowest number win, whoever it belongs to.

None of this is glamorous. It's supply-chain plumbing. But it's the actual explanation for the price gap that turned a Manchester spreadsheet into a company, and it's worth readers understanding it exists rather than just trusting the number on the page. Every guide on the JetMeAway blog is written under the same byline — JetMeAway Scout — and that's not a marketing device we bolted on after the fact. It's a genuine writing discipline that governs what gets published and what gets sent back for another pass.
The test is simple to state and harder to pass than it sounds: would a genuinely well-travelled friend who has actually stayed in this neighbourhood, and who has nothing to sell you beyond an honest opinion, tell you to book this room — or skip it? Not "is this technically a nice hotel." Not "does this destination sound impressive in a headline." These are trips I've actually taken, hotels I've actually booked through JetMeAway's own comparison engine, and neighbourhoods I'd send a friend to without hedging.
Lisbon's Príncipe Real is the single European neighbourhood I recommend most often to first-time visitors who want more than postcard sightseeing. It's walkable, genuinely mixed between locals and travellers rather than being a tourist enclave, has a serious specialty-coffee and natural-wine scene, and sits close enough to the Baixa and Alfama that you can walk into the postcard part of the city on a whim without living inside it. Lisbon rewards a slower pace better than almost any other short-haul European capital.
Barcelona's Gràcia district does something similar — it's a ten-minute metro ride from Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter, but it feels like an entirely separate, quieter city: small plazas, neighbourhood bars that haven't adjusted their prices for tourists, and a genuine residential rhythm. The Nice-to-Marseille corridor on the French Riviera is, in my view, the most underrated value play in Western Europe. Everyone defaults to the Amalfi Coast for a Mediterranean-glamour trip, and Amalfi's summer pricing has become genuinely punishing as a result. Nice and Marseille deliver a comparable coastline, comparable food, and a fraction of the price, particularly in the May-June and September shoulder windows. Chiang Mai is the destination I recommend most for anyone doing a genuine work-from-anywhere reset rather than a two-week holiday. The pace is slower than Bangkok, the wellness and fitness infrastructure (Muay Thai gyms, genuinely good yoga studios, a strong specialty-coffee scene in the Nimman district) is dense enough to build a real routine around, and the cost of living lets a UK travel budget stretch three or four times further than the same money would in a European capital.
Ubud, Bali does a similar job for a slightly different traveller — less about digital-nomad infrastructure, more about a genuine slowdown: rice terraces, real yoga and wellness culture rather than the Instagram version of it, and a food scene that rewards wandering rather than following a guidebook. The trade-off against somewhere like the Gili Islands or Bali's southern beach strip is worth making if what you actually want is rest rather than a party.
Bangkok remains my honest recommendation as a first landing point for anyone new to Southeast Asia, purely on connectivity and ease — the flight options from UK airports are strong, the city absorbs a first-timer without punishing mistakes, and it's the natural hub for onward travel to Chiang Mai in the north or the islands in the south. Don't skip it to save two days chasing a "more authentic" first stop; Bangkok earns the stopover.
Personal Picks — Africa
Marrakech's Medina and the coastal town of Essaouira, taken together as a single trip, is the African itinerary I recommend most to UK travellers who haven't been to the continent before. Marrakech is under a four-hour flight from most UK airports, genuinely different from a European city break in a way that resets your sense of travel, and Essaouira — a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Marrakech — gives you an entirely different coastal, wind-swept counterpoint to the Medina's intensity. Routing through a secondary US hub rather than New York or LA is a piece of advice I give often and that surprises people every time. Boston and Seattle both deliver a genuinely rewarding, walkable American city trip without the price inflation, crowding and first-timer overwhelm that New York in particular produces. Longer-term, the goal is to close the gap between the Scout app's neighbourhood intelligence and the main hotel comparison engine so that neighbourhood fit shows up directly inside search results — not as a separate app you check afterward, but as part of the same search that shows you the price.
Wholesale-rate expansion into secondary destinations. The LiteAPI, RateHawk and Webbeds wholesale relationships that power the price advantage on major cities are being extended into smaller and secondary destinations through 2026 — the places where a big-name OTA's coverage thins out and the wholesale-rate gap tends to be largest, because there's less retail competition keeping prices honest.
Continued budget-tier content investment. With UK households feeling a genuine squeeze in 2026, expanding real, honestly-verified budget hotel coverage across more cities remains a bigger near-term priority for the blog than adding further luxury-tier depth to destinations we've already covered well.
